Today begins National Eating Disorder Awareness Week. Eating disorders are widely misunderstood, and sometimes even joked about – everybody knows somebody who struggles with body image, or disordered eating behaviors, whether you know it or not. They affect millions of people of every gender, race, and economic background.
24 MILLION people in some form struggle with an eating disorder. The goal this week is to show those who struggle that they are not alone and ultimately increase outreach and awareness of eating disorders and body image issues, while reducing the stigma surrounding eating disorders and improving access to treatment resources.
Eating disorders are serious, life-threatening illnesses. It is important to recognize the pressures, attitudes and behaviors that shape the disorder. This week we will be sharing stories of hope and using the hashtag #NEDAweek. Let’s raise awareness together!
